The Toy Fox Terrier is a smaller version of their Smooth Fox Terrier ancestors. Originally, these dogs were bred for a variety of tasks, including hunting small game such as squirrels as well as farm ratters. Today, the Toy Fox Terrier is a companion breed. Despite its crossbreeding with other toy breeds such as Chihuahuas and Manchester Terriers, the Toy Fox remains one of the few “true American” breeds.
Toy Fox Terriers are highly intelligent and easily trained. They housebreak quickly and pick up on tricks and commands just as well. As Terriers with small prey instincts, they may not do well with smaller pets in the same house. They also tend to develop “small dog syndrome” and should be socialized well from early on to avoid aggressive behavior towards other dogs or strangers.
These dogs are very devoted to their owners and will often want to jump into bed to cuddle. Due to their size, and especially as puppies, jumping on any kind of furniture should not be allowed. It can cause them to break one or more legs. They also may not be suitable for small children that play rough—they are playful but prone to broken bones!
