Standard Schnauzer

About

The Schnauzer, bred in Germany, is actually three separate and distinct breeds, the Mini, the Standard, and the Giant. The Standard which is the oldest and original Schnauzer, is listed in the working group, standing at 18-21 inches tall and weighs 30-45 pounds. Bred as a guard dog and farm dog, the Standard is a serious dog that requires a serious owner.

The Standard is sturdy and strong, thick in build and stubborn to a fault. The breed is naturally wary of strangers and requires early socialization to ensure a well balanced dog. He is loyal and loving to his family and intolerant of strange dogs or strange people in his territory. Intelligent and ready for training, this breed excels with a firm owner that sets early boundaries and provides both consistent, mental and physical exercise to prevent boredom and negative behaviors from developing.

The coat of a Standard Schnauzer is medium in length and either soft American style coat, or the hard, German style of coat. The breed offers very little shedding, and is considered to be hypo-allergenic and low dander, making them a good choice for many with allergies. Brushing is needed to maintain the coat and prevent matting and professional grooming is recommended to trim the coat and keep it in shape. Ears on the Schnauzer can be naturally floppy or cropped to stand erect. The tail can be naturally long or docked short. The colors of a Schnauzer can be black, silver, black and silver, pepper and salt,
