The Mini Walrus, also referred to as the Ba-Shar, is a newer designer crossbreed whose parents are the Shar Pei and the Beagle. These dogs make excellent family pets as they are loyal, playful, and affectionate.
The Mini Walrus has superior scenting abilities, thanks to its Beagle parent. They’re extremely focused when exploring new surroundings and will follow their nose almost anywhere. They’re also likely to chase down smaller animals and be reserved around strangers. Early training and socialization is important with this breed to ensure that there are no behavioral issues with other dogs or people.
The Shar Pei does have a stubborn streak, and so the Mini Walrus may inherit that trait and be a little difficult to train. Of course, it’s nothing that consistency and positive reinforcement can’t fix! These dogs are very good with children, but should be supervised with very small children. Their daily exercise requirements are moderate as they are not too active. Short walks and interactive playtime will do the trick, which also makes them suitable for apartment living. However, they do suffer from separation anxiety and will howl to show their discomfort.
