The Maltipom is a recent designer crossbreed whose parents are the Maltese and the Pomeranian. They mostly inherit the stature, face, and ears of the Pomeranian and the flowing coat of the Maltese. They’re a first generation crossbreed as they come from two purebred parents.
The Maltipom is very intelligent and will respond well to training and pick up commands either. However, like most small dog breeds they have a tendency to develop “small dog syndrome,” becoming dominant and assuming the alpha role. Socialization and training must begin early on to ensure the Maltipom doesn’t develop any behavioral issues.
Overall, the Maltipom is a friendly and affectionate breed that will get along well with children. They will get along with other dogs but can become dominant and territorial. They prefer to be the only dog in the house. While they’ll love the entire family, they’ll form a particularly strong bond with one member of the family. They’re also prone to separation anxiety so they shouldn’t be left alone for long periods of time.
Maltipoms are active and they love to run and play. They require at least a thirty minute daily walk and interactive playtime. If left unattended or without mental and physical stimulation, Multipoms will resort to barking, chewing, and digging.
