Great Pyrenees

About

Big, white, and fluffy, these immensely strong and large dogs resemble polar bears in appearance due to their enormous size and white coat. Originally said to be from Central Asia or Siberia and migrating into Europe where he was used as livestock guardian, the breed is also known as the Pyrenean Mountain dog. A massive dog of strong body, he stands 26-36 inches at the shoulder and can weigh 80-130 pounds.

The Pyrenees is a lumbering dog, protective and willful. Sweet and affectionate, the Pyrenees is known to be good with children when properly socialized and does well in both a suburban or rural lifestyle. His eyes are soulful and his loyalty without question, the breed loves his family and wants nothing more than to be by their side. Not a couch potato by any means, this breed does well with consistent physical and mental exercise to promote a well balanced dog of good character. The breed does best when his owner provides firm and consistent boundaries, early socialization, and early obedience training in order to prevent negative behaviors from developing when he is so large that it is more difficult to work with him. For those that choose to love and provide for this breeds needs, they will be rewarded with a dog that is loyal, sweet, playful, protective of house and family, and patient with children.

The coat of a Pyrenees is thick, fluffy and soft. Grooming consists of frequent brushing to remove dead undercoat and to prevent matting. Shedding is heavy for this breed due to his thick, insulated coat. The jowls on the Pyrenees define the breed as a drooling dog. Potential owners should be aware of his extremely sloppy kisses and drool around the house when considering this breed choice. Coloring for this breed consists of white, with or without badger, red, gray, reddish brown, or tan markings. His average lifespan is 8-12 years of age.
