Actually classified as three distinct breeds, the Shorthaired Pointer, the Wirehaired Pointer, and the Longhaired Pointer, were all originally bred as hunters and today are still a great choice as a hunting dog as well as an athletic companion for families. With three different coats, the breeds look and behave similarly, with just a few distinctions between them. The average height for this breed is 20-25 inches at the shoulder and weighs an average of 45-70 pounds. Originating from Germany and having a keen sense of scenting to go along with his intellect, the Pointer has a great reputation as an all-purpose dog.
Bred for endurance and agility in the field, the pointer is a happy dog that loves to be outdoors enjoying activities with his family and after a hard day’s work, will enjoy time at your feet or in your bed. Smart and sweet, with a bit of silliness mixed in, this breed is well suited to suburban or rural living with an active family or single person that is looking for a happy dog that is ready for fun or work. The breed excels as a jogging or hiking partner, and is loyal and sweet with his family, while protective of his home and property as a watchdog.
The coat on this breed will vary depending upon your choice. The short and wire coat are both very easy to maintain by simply brushing regularly and will shed minimally. The longhair will need more frequent brushing and will shed moderately. No professional grooming is required for any of the three varieties. The shorthair and wirehair coloring is typically liver and white or solid liver (brownish red). The Longhair comes in solid colors of brown, brown and white, or liver roan. The average lifespan for all three varieties is 9-14 years.
