The Chiweenie is a designer breed whose parents are the Daschund and the Chihuahua. They go by many names, including the Mexican hot dog, the German taco, the Choxie, the Cheewie and the Weenihuaha, to name a few. The breed is relatively new, and while it first came around by accident, it’s now in fairly high demand.
Chiweenies are very energetic, and will always prefer to play over everything else. However, they’re still very much cuddly lap dogs. Much like the Chihuahua, these dogs are feisty yet obedient. They also may have a prey drive thanks to their Daschund parent. They have loud personalities, and tend to be a bit “yappy.” Early socialization and training is necessary to avoid excessive barking, and aggression towards other dogs.
The Chiweenie does best with singles, seniors, and couples. They will adapt to small families with children, but they tend to latch on to just one person. They also show more separation anxiety than other breeds, so they don’t do well when left alone. Aside from their need for companionship, they’re fairly low maintenance. They need a moderate amount of exercise and mental stimulation daily, as well as a warm climate to live in.
