The Belgian Tervuren is another one of the four types of Belgian herding dogs. This medium-sized breed sports a long, elegant coat atop a muscular frame. Originally bred for herding, the Belgian Tervuren is a highly intelligent and active breed. They’re quite literally always in motion.
Like all working breeds the Tervuren needs ample exercise beyond and challenging tasks daily. They’re also very demanding of attention, and will follow their master or family members around constantly. They make for excellent watch dogs, but also have a great sense of humor and will get along with children and other dogs if socialized properly. Due to their “prey instincts”, they may not get along with the family cat or other small animals.
The Belgian Tervuren is highly adaptable as an indoor/outdoor breed. They can live in apartments if exercised properly, although a house with an average-sized yard is preferred. It’s also important that the yard is securely fenced in, because a Tervuren can and will get out if it really wants to.
The Belgian Tervuren is an accomplished police, therapy, and performance dog. The breed is not recommended for those who lack experience with high energy working dogs as they can be stubborn and sensitive to harsh training methods.
