Australian Shepherd

About

This breed is commonly known as an “aussie” and was in fact developed in the western United States not Australia, as some mistakenly believe. The breed was originally bred as a ranch dog to herd and protect the livestock on the farm. Today, the Aussie is versatile enough to be a devoted house companion but still enjoys top billing as an excellent choice for farm dog work throughout the world as well as agility, obedience, herding, flyball, and many other dog sports.

This breed will excel in any job given to it but must have a job in order to thrive. Known as energetic, smart and loyal, this breed is shockingly intelligent and requires consistent, mental as well as physical exercise in order to prevent compulsive or poor behaviors from developing due to boredom. This is not a breed to be owned by a couch potato or anyone that has only a little time to spend with their pet. Aussies are great jogging companions, love to swim, hike, and are always up for a good game of fetch. It is said that a tired Aussie is a good Aussie, but it takes a lot to tire an Aussie out! Only a person or family with a strong desire to spend a lot of consistent, active time with their dog should consider this breed. Aussies are known to be devoted family dogs that love their family and generally do well with children and other pets. They do well in a variety of environments, cold or warm weather, apartment or home, single owner or large family, and bond deeply with their family. Early training and socialization is strongly encouraged to ensure a well balanced dog of good character for companionship in the home.

With average sizes being 40-60 pounds and standing 18-23 inches tall at shoulders, the average lifespan of the breed is 10-15 Years. Colors vary greatly from solids to merles of both red and blue, and tri colors. Shedding is considered to be moderate and the coat can be maintained through regular grooming sessions with a good brush to prevent matting and keep the coat in good condition. Ears can be down or stand erect, tails can be naturally long or bobtail.
