This American Working Breed was originally used to guard livestock and protect their master and property from intruders. Tough and affectionate, this much taller and larger version of other smaller Bulldog breeds, averages 50-120lbs depending upon bone structure, and stand about 18-27 inches at the shoulders.
This active, strong, and fun loving breed has a heavy bone structure with square features. This is a dominant breed that requires stern boundaries set early on to prevent bad habits from forming. They do well with children if properly socialized, but because of their large size should always be supervised. With proper training they can be very well behaved but they do need a strong pack leader to provide proper training, and both mental and physical exercise as they are a dominant breed that can become easily bored if left alone for long periods of time. The breed can be good with other animals if properly introduced but do have a strong prey drive so supervision with smaller animals is strongly recommended. The American Bulldog is a devoted companion dog that offers watchdog capabilities with a sweet and affectionate personality, along a touch of mischief and sense of humor. This is a great breed choice for an active lifestyle and the desire to have a dog join in on the fun. Unlike other bulldog breeds, the American Bulldog is a true athlete and loves outdoor activities such as swimming, hiking, and a good game of fetch. Early training and socialization is strongly encouraged to ensure a well balanced dog of good character for companionship in the home.
Common coloring for this breed is solid colors or bi-colors of brindle and white, red and white, and fawn and white. The breed enjoys an average life span of 10-14 years. Shedding is considered minimal with the American Bulldog and with regular brushing sessions, this breed’s coat is very easily maintained.
As this is a brachycephalic (short faced) breed, it is important to understand the needs of this type of breed prior to purchase to ensure that this breed suits your lifestyle and climate, and to provide proper care during hot weather or excessive activities for the health and well being of the dog.
